Here I will tell of some of some dumb spellings that people use for words. The misspellings are gray, big, crossed out, and bold and the correct spellings are small, green and bold. Note that they are NOT top 10, just 7 dumb spellings.
virii
Viruses
Vir means man. Viri is the plural of that, and means men. Virus is in no way related to those. Oh, and viruses don’t play the Wii either.
hippocracy/hippocrate
hypocrisy/hypocrite
You may have noticed that I have a post called Hippocracy: A growing threat. That was a post about a (fake) government ruled by hippos, not hypocrisy. Why is it hypocrisy/hypocrite? Simple. Hippos don’t live in crates. Well, maybe they do, but only when they are being shipped to different places, such as a zoo.
fourms
forums
I am not talking about when forum is a made into a typo. I am talking about when people use fourm consistently. Why is it forum, not fourm? Say forum out loud. What do you hear?
definately
definitely
Visit http://www.d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y.com/
moar
more
Why use more instead of moar? MOAR is for drug addicts to get help. Oh, and also for lolcat pictures
rong
wrong
You learned this in 1st or 2nd grade.
awsome
awesome
You remember the ending e but not the beginning one?

I am DEFINATELY a “definitely” misspeller – I also usually make a bad ENTERANCE!

I’m an English teacher and my students get “definitely” wrong ALL THE TIME. It drives me nuts. But the other one that I can’t figure out is that they’re trying to say “lose” and they write “loose.” What’s that about?

Also “tomorrow” is often misspelled as “tommorow”

Don’t you sometimes wonder if it might be a waist of thyme? Since I first commented on hippocracy the incidence has grown enormously.

How bouts them peeps who is fusin up their, they’re, there or yours you’re or its it’s?

Well, I was thinking about putting there/their/they’re, your/you’re, and its/it’s, but those wouldn’t be spelling mistakes, they would be using the wrong homophone. Well, unless they used “theyir” or “yerr” or “itts” or something like that.

Lol! Couldn’t get enough of this page! Had to check it out myself to correct a college graduate. I was thinking that hippocrate might have been some sort of Latin spelling I missed out knowing by only graduating high school!
But what hurt the most, coming here and finding out that I misspell definitely…. Yikes and Ouch! Guess everyone learns something from anothers mistake…. Painful to say sometimes and worse to spell! I bet the college grad misspells definitely too!!! LOL!

And I do also have to say, spell check doesn’t always work the way you think it will in the end. Definately pops up just like definitely does on spell check and on an iPhone! Crazy how computers screw you at times, huh?
